Eternal flame: The return of the red head.

This week my fashion column looks at the mighty return of the red head….

It’s great to see so many red-headed celebrities proudly embracing their natural colour or even enhancing it and non-reds are dying their locks and jumping on the red bandwagon. Famous flame-haired celebrities including Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks, Florence Welsh of ‘Florence and the Machine’ fame, Julianne Moore, Isla Fisher, Cynthia Nixon, Kathy Griffin and Debra Messing are all dominating the entertainment scene. Pop queen Rihanna recently dyed her hair bright scarlet red, coincidently her new album titled “Loud” was released last week. Thankfully the ‘ranga’ prejudice seems to have vanished, well for females anyway.

Models Lilly Cole, Karen Elson and Coco Rocha, are always in incredible demand thanks to their fiery red locks. Carmen Kass, ranked the fifteenth highest earning model in the world, recently dyed her hair red for a Louis Vuitton show. She apparently loved it so much she’s decided to keep the new look. While on the topic, we can’t leave out our very own Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Jacen Ward, Goldwell Ambassador and hair stylist for The Creative Group (Surry Hills) says about 20% of their clients are going for various shades of red and copper tones.  “A huge trend for this season is an almost Violet magenta based red which is extremely popular with the Gen Y client who is looking for that cyber-sport type look” said Ward. Pop stars Florence Welsh and Rihanna, are both popular reference points for Ward’s clients “Florence Welch has definitely pushed the red hue up the popularity meter. When Rihanna shot her recent videos sporting red hair, we also had a few regular copper clients request a slightly deeper and more vibrant red tone to their usual selection.”

When it comes to clothes, there are certain colours that look best when paired with red-hair. Natural red head’s generally look great in shades of deep blue, greens, purple shades such as violet and various shades of red itself. Complexion is just as important to consider.  Natural red heads who have pale skin, with green or hazel eyes (Julia Gillard please take note), can avoid looking washed out by not wearing black on their top half. Instead opt for earthy tones, nude shades, pastels, mustard and deep shades of green. When wearing a black jacket or top, consider injecting a dash of a more complimentary colour, simply by adding a scarf.

In Sex and The City 2: The Movie, Miranda played by Cynthia Nixon looks ravishing in most scenes. Often wearing designer frocks in tones of mustard, red, violet and emerald green. The stylist behind Sex and the City, Patricia Field has fiery red hair herself. When in doubt, green should be your go-to-colour. There are many shades that work including: olive, military, myrtle, emerald and teal.
