This week my weekly column looks at what to wear to the summer dance festivals.
For many, summer dance festivals are all about having fun and enjoying the entertainment line-up. For some it’s the ultimate opportunity to parade around in their finest festival threads and hone in on their people watching skills. This weekend, Stereosonic will kick off the summer festivals line up, followed by Field Day, Big Day Out, Good Vibrations, Future Music Festival and a whole swag of other festivals. If you’re heading to one of the summer festivals, here are some options to consider, helping you avoid common festival hazards such as sunburn, bruised toes and loss of expensive personal possessions.
Hats– they will keep the sun off your face and protect you from getting sunburnt. A hat can also help absorb excessive perspiration, induced by hours of dancing. Trucker hats, caps and straw trilbys are your best options. No cowboy hats please.
Sunglasses – are just as vital as your entry ticket, don’t leave home without them. This year it’s all about the RayBan ‘Wayfarer’ style, retro styled glasses, squarish shaped specs and aviators. Try wearing a cheaper pair, to avoid the possibility of having your favourite designer specs crushed by a sea of dancing feet.
Watches– with numerous acts playing across various arenas at different times, a watch is essential to ensure you don’t miss the acts you plan to see. It’s all about brightly coloured, bold wrist candy with retro styled features. Leave the Rolex at home.
Bags - A small casual shoulder bag with a strap will come in handy to pop your essentials in, including entry ticket, cash, sun cream, ID, lip balm, keys and mobile phone. The 80’s ‘Bum-Bag’ has made a come-back, offering a useful hands free storage option to consider.
Shoes – if you want squished bruised toes then wear your thongs. Smart feet will opt for closed toe options such as trainers, high tops, ballet flats or canvas style shoes. Strappy sandals are a lighter, more fashionable option for the girls. Consider popping some cushiony innersoles or party feet into your shoes for extra comfort. If it rains, opt for gumboots.
Girls – cute lightweight summer dresses, singlets, vests, studded bustiers, romper suits and military inspired threads will be popular choices. Expect to see loads of acid wash, mesh, double denim ensembles, bold fluoro colours and slogan print t-shirts with every second girl wearing cheeky cut off denim shorts.
Boys - a singlet, vest or t-shirt paired with some shorts or a pair of jeans. Shorts are the more comfortable option and this season we are seeing them get shorter in length, sitting 2 – 3 inches above the knee and the khaki short is back. Canvas shoes or sneakers such as classic pair of Asics or Converse or will complete the look perfectly.
