This week my weekly column looks at 4 key trends for the fellas, for the coming season….
Some guys love shopping, whilst others absolutely loathe it. But at the end of the day, we’ve all got to wear something. So to make your next shopping adventure a little easier consider these four hot-to-trot tends.
Military magic
Military inspired fashions have marched from the catwalks and into a retail store near you. Prepare to salute sharply tailored jackets with military style buttons and details, such as shoulder epaulettes and lapels. When it comes to colour, earthy tones dominate with shades of green, khaki, brown and various shades of grey. Accessorise with aviator style sunglasses, military style watches, silver ‘dog tag’ inspired jewellery pieces, oversized duffle bags and chunky black boots. The best strategy to win this style battle, is choose one military inspired item, and mix it in with your basic wardrobe staples such as jeans. Don’t go overboard with the trend, or you may get drafted for service.
Mad Men
Thanks to the hit US television sitcom Mad Men, there’s been a major resurgence in late 1950’s and early 1960’s style. The sartorially perfect male cast members including the lead character Don Draper, wear impeccably tailored three piece suits, double breasted style suits, brogue shoes and bowties. The suits are slim cut, matched with slim ties and accessorised with tie pins, pocket squares and trilby style hats. Outside of the corporate boardroom, their dapper preppy style consists of cardigans, polo tops, velvet jackets, v-neck jumpers, argyle prints and leather loafers.
A second skin
Leather jackets are back, with some styles paying homage to the 1980’s such as the biker style leather jacket. The current biker style jacket is much more relaxed, made from incredibly soft leathers and without the strong eighties power shoulder. The biker style jacket generally features lots of zips and handy pockets. Leather bomber jackets, with or without a hood are also a popular style. For a more classic style of jacket, consider a leather trench coat. Leather jackets are extremely versatile, team them with a t-shirt and jeans, or dress them up with pants and a shirt.
Double up your denim
Jeans can be hard to shop for; the trick is to try on loads of different styles from straight leg, to bootleg and even the skinny style. Once you find the right style for your shape, you then have a plethora of colours, finishes and details you can choose from. Dark indigo coloured jeans look the most flattering on, and the most versatile colour that can easily be dressed up or down. One of the biggest trends for jeans, are styles that are finished with a waxy coated surface. Also big for the coming season are jeans with an extremely ‘worn in’ look complete with frayed edges and distressed holes. Another trend resurrected from the eighties archive is the ‘denim on denim’, rebadged as ‘double denim’. Wearing a denim shirt or chambray shirt with denim jeans has again received approval from the fashion gods. If you decide to dabble in the double denim trend, go for a really light colour denim shirt or chambray shirt, and pair it with a much darker shade of jeans.
